Nature’s Contributions to People Shape Sense of Place in the Coffee Cultural Landscape of Colombia

Understanding the roots of a sense place in farmlands is crucial for stopping rural exodus to urban areas. Farmers’ experiences related their way life, peace and quiet, rootedness, pleasure, inspiration are fundamental components farmlands. Here, we used city Pereira located Coffee Cultural Landscape Colombia (CCLC) examine role nature’s contributions people (NCP) forming meanings attachments that shape this region. This region has experienced intense agricultural lands abandonment due rapid urbanization over last decades. To do so, mixture qualitative quantitative methods was used, including semi-structured interviews, observation, dialogue, capture farmers’ perceptions emotions associated with farmlands, reasons remaining, diversity NCPs. Results indicated farmers recognized as quiet safe space support family cohesion. also showed characteristics farms (e.g., practices, distance cities, gender) play an important articulating farmer’s attachment Finally, identified nonmaterial NCP physical psychological supportive identities) be most shaping place. We call need include robust transparent deliberative negotiation mechanisms inclusive all relevant stakeholders, aim address unequal power, recognize strengthen communities’ action on CCLC.
